A home run in baseball is the most thrilling play when a batter completes a full circle around all four bases with a single swing, usually by hitting the ball over the fence in fair territory. When someone hits a home run, the score changes right away and it’s basically the perfect combo of raw power and explosive speed.
Official Types of Home Run
Over-the-Fence Home Run (Most common type)
When a batter hits a fair ball through the air over the outfield fence and it lands between the foul poles. The batter hits the ball, runs all four bases and lets any runners on base score without trouble. There are some special situations too, if the ball hits the foul pole or bounces off a fielder’s glove and then goes over the wall, those still count as home runs. However, if a ball bounces on the ground and then goes over the fence that doesn’t count as a home run anymore.
Inside-the-Park Home Run (Much rarer)
When this happens, the ball keeps moving around the field and the batter manages to run all the way around every base without getting tagged out. Since the ball is still in play, the other team can still try to make defensive plays. These kinds of home runs usually need the batter to be really fast, hit the ball far and sometimes get lucky with how it bounces. Back in the Dead-Ball Era, they happened more often but nowadays they only happen in less than 1% of all home runs.
How to Hit Home Runs in Baseball
- Generate power from your legs and hips: Your lower body is what really powers your swing, not just your arms.
- Get your timing and swing sequence right: Start by loading on your back hip, take a controlled stride and let your hips rotate first.
- Make solid contact: Keep your bat in the strike zone, put backspin on the ball, and stay balanced through your finish.
- Find the perfect launch angle and exit velocity: When you hit the ball at about 20-30° and get it off your bat at 95+ mph, you’ve got the best shot at clearing the fence.
- Be smart about what you swing at: Look for pitches you can hit well and only swing when it makes sense to give yourself the best chance to succeed.
