The push shot is actually a really cool and underrated technique in badminton that doesn’t get enough credit. Instead of relying on raw power like a smash, it uses precise wrist and finger control to send the shuttle flat and fast. This keeps opponents guessing and often forces weak returns. It’s a simple yet powerful way to save energy, study your opponent’s movement and set up attacks in both singles and doubles.
How to Perform Push Shot in Badminton
- Grip the racket with a relaxed forehand “V” grip or backhand thumb grip so your wrist and fingers can control where the shuttle goes.
- Keep your balance by bending your knees, holding your racket up high and using a quick split step with a short lunge to move into position.
- Strike the shuttle in front of your body at net height by using a small push motion with your wrist and fingers instead of swinging your whole arm.
- Place the shot low into gaps and recover quickly to ready position.
- Practice with feeder drills and practice push-to-push rallies to get better at being consistent and controlling how fast the rally goes.
